Ovid Napa Valley

Perched high atop Pritchard Hill, Ovid Winery farms its vineyards organically and is CCOF certified. Howard Backen of Backen & Backen Architecture, interior designer Nicole Hollis, and Grassi created a solar-powered winery at the owners' direction. The project includes a corrugated metal gable-roofed tasting room and subterranean fermenting caves. For the 2,000 square foot tasting room, the team used reclaimed timber, formed concrete, and glass. Rock from the 20 foot deep caves' excavation became a stone pathway linking the winery to a private residence. In the concrete caves, hanging Edison bulb fixtures cast a magical light on the oak barrels.
